How was your first day? What stood out to you?

My Thoughts

Of the various things we did today, what stood out to me the most was the lesson we were challenged with upon completing our soccer game. All of us interns were tasked to play against another team that was stacked with very skilled players. In short, we lost…badly. 

Towards the end, Mr. Garner came to assist our side in strategizing. He instructed us to start playing more than the allowed number of players on the field. At the end of the game, one of the points was that we were pitted against a team that we had no hope of defeating. The teams were unfair, yet we were trying to play within the boundaries of the rules that are meant to keep the game fair. 

The lesson I learned today from that activity was that as people who are going into environments where there are people who are impoverished as a result of unfair laws and circumstances. As people who are planning on leaving a lasting impact and helping people, we have to learn to see where things are unfair and unjust and respond by adapting to the situation and finding a solution that evens those scales.
