Sports Lessons

During our time in Africa, we have played a lot more soccer than I am used to compared to back home. I enjoy soccer but the people in Uganda really love it and it’s been a blessing to play soccer with them. We have gotten to play games with our cooperatives, the St. John’s school team, in a prison, and a team of older men. Each time the other team gave every effort they had and it was nice to see the joy they had playing with us. Sometimes language or culture can make it intimidating to meet people, but playing a sport that people love breaks those barriers. We were laughing together and smiling and just enjoying each other’s presence. We got to play the St. John’s team twice and each time the games were very close. I’m thankful we had that opportunity to play with them. The games won’t be something that I will forget and I know the kids will remember them for a long time. The experience was so much better because they were really into the game. Even though they were younger, their speed kept them in the game. I’m grateful that we could set that up.
