Ministering at St. Johns Primary

By Ssubi Barnbas

Summer Internship 2023 we went to St. Johns, a school next to our campus in Uganda. We served the students through biblically rooted lessons and lectures, prepared lunch for them, taught them some songs, played volleyball and futbol with them and fellowshipped together.

St. Johns is a school at the side of Wakiso district that barely receives help and attention from the government. Students lack clothing where they have a single uniform to use for the whole week, and most of their clothings are filled with holes, insufficient/lack of enough teachers, and they are rarely paid. Students come to school before they eat and wait until evening where they find leftovers from what is supposed to be lunch. Students walk very long distances and none of them are picked up by a parent.

Studying on an empty stomach is not easy but they still do it every day, every year. The conditions, these students survive in are ones that would have beaten them to their knees, but these students are still standing strong, hoping that one day things will change after they study and get a job. Psalms 146 speaks about putting our trust in God and not in the leaders in the government (princes), for help, support, and rescue. These students growing up in a harsh environment have strengthened their endurance to go through tough situations without relying on anyone but God.
