Journal prompt: What is one lesson I’ve learned from my East African friends that I will never forget?
The friends I’ve met are tough people. I learned the importance of my education and specifically my perseverance and motivation for the opportunity. A friend I met at the SLAM Uganda week taught me this. His name was Allen and he shared with me his story of how his education was taken away unfairly so at a young age he ran away and pursued school. Since then he’s been diligent in his studies and eager to continue.
Do I value education that much? Do I seek out more? Am I curious? Am I relying on others to determine how far I go? These are questions provoked from hearing this story and seeing the excitement for learning in his eyes.
This has opened my eyes and I’m going to practice seeking and loving the education of God’s Word with a different perspective from now on. He had to endure so much disomfort and hostility just for the chance to learn.
