Cross-Cultural Communications
By Rachael Voss
Throughout the trip I have had the opportunity to engage with so many local Ugandans as well as Kenyans. From the locals here at GOD property to those out in the city, I’ve learned a lot about Ugandan culture through them as well as each person’s individual walks of life. It’s insane to hear how differently they grew up from me. I did have some struggles when it came to mutual understanding with the differences in our accents, choice of wording things, and overall the differences in our cultures.
We went to a conference and met with people that we would partner with in the future in Uganda and I got to talk with multiple locals. But I got a little discourage because of the lack of understanding of their accents. It made me feel bad because I could also tell that they had trouble understanding me.
Although some of these situations were challenging I definitely see how I can grow in the future. In the future when situations like this come up I will have had more experience to know how to more efficiently communicate with people of different cultures and languages. Throughout my life I will always be growing in many different ways as I walk with God.
