Maddie - Update 3: SLAM Blog

This past week was SLAM. As interns we were given the responsibility to assist in facilitating this week as well as studying and immersing ourselves in a specific aspect of program management. I chose to focus on the evening focus groups. That’s the small group reflection time that follows the big evening sessions. They are so impactful! I was given the privilege of leading one and it stretched me greatly.

I was witness to six girls beginning to talk about their faith and discuss how they could practically implement the lessons from the Bible that we were being taught. Through my time studying focus groups and diving into the “what” and “why” behind them I developed an appreciation for the practice. It gives kids a chance to come to Jesus - to ask questions and discuss answers, and ultimately, to develop practical ways they can live like Jesus and increase their knowledge of him. They are so important to a kid’s service week.

As the week progressed I compared SLAM to a service mission trip I did to Chattanooga three different years. I noted that my trips to Chattanooga lacked any set reflection or processing application. I saw the benefit of these groups in the six girls I met with and I definitely remember feeling the lack of assisted processing time on some of my previous trips.

There are many lessons and thoughts circling in my head I am thankful for this week and for the times of worship and Bible study. I'm thankful for all that I learned about how the ministry of SLAM runs and for the leaders of my trip. I'm thankful God was present and remained close as I learned and reflected.
