Kampala Church Visit

By Jacob Olivera

On the ninth of July, we visited a church in Kampala called Katalasso Ministries. The church was pastored by John Nyago’s brother, Joseph. Upon walking into the church, even walking unto it, I was shocked. It was much bigger and flashier than the previous two churches we visited. Because of that, I thought it was going to be a prosperity gospel church until I learned who the pastor was.

The beginning of the service was our normal routine. We worshipped then got on stage, introduced ourselves, and performed our numbers. Everything was going well, but nothing seemed to stick out. Pastor Joseph did have an interesting mini-sermon about angels, but again it didn’t stick out too much. Then Mr. Garner started preaching.

Mr. Garner’s message was fantastic. He taught about David, but his purpose was to teach them how to read the Bible without religious blinders. I’m not going to lie, I was nervous when he started, but the church was so receptive of the Word despite how counter-cultural it was. I was inspired. This moment showed me just how hungry people are for the Word in an honest interpretation. Not everyone will listen, but there are those who are willing to dismiss culture in favor of the truth. God’s Word is powerful and draws people in.
